COMMUNITY ASSEMBLIES The Community Assemblies are the new structure replacing the Area Panels. City-wide
there will be 7 assemblies which contain 4 electoral wards each. Councillor David Baker, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council explained “Our
proposals for Community Assemblies are about giving people a voice and choice. They signal a massive shift from current ways
of working and put local people in charge of their local services, starting with local library services, local parks and how
local streets are cleaned. This will allow services to be shaped according to the needs of local communities, moving away
from a one size fits all approach dictated from the Town Hall. Assemblies will also mean a much stronger role for local Councillors, making them
directly accountable for what is happening in their community. Every single ward Councillor will be part of decision making
about budgets for their area. Each assembly will agree a community plan for the area. Assemblies will set targets agreed with local
people, be able to prioritise and set service budgets within their boundaries, and direct how local services are delivered
to improve the area”. Sharrow sits within the Central Community Assembly which is managed by Rebecca Maddox and her team. Sharrow
Partnership are making links with the Central Community Assembly Team so that we can all work together to try and build on
lessons learnt from the partnership and look at sustainable models of practice.

SHARROW PROGRAMME Through the Sharrow Programme, Sheffield City Council works with other partners and local residents
to improve services, community facilities, public buildings and green spaces in Sharrow. Since 2005 this has meant significant investment in improved local facilities
including the new Sharrow Primary School and the regeneration of Mount Pleasant Park. We have also worked with other organisations
to make sure the wider community can continue to benefit from these developments. None of this would have been possible without
the support and involvement from local organisations and local people. The Sharrow Partnership has supported this activity
for the last 4 years. The outstanding
element of the Programme is the idea of a ‘Community Hub’ for Sharrow. In the future this might bring together
a range of local services and provide improved community facilities in accessible and quality accommodation. For information
about this and other activity in the Community Assembly Area go to http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/community-assemblies/central

SHARROW NEIGHBOURHOOD ACTION GROUP The Sharrow Neighbourhood Action Group collaboration is an exciting new way of joined up working and
brings together representatives from South Yorkshire Police, the Safer Neighbourhood Area Team, Sheffield Futures, local Councillors,
Sheffield Homes and the Sharrow Partnership team, as well as other partner agencies. The group meet monthly to discuss local
issues like antisocial behaviour, headline crime, environmental improvements and community cohesion initiatives. With an emphasis
on action, as well as the exchange and sharing of information, this successful approach results in practical, visible changes
out in the community! A weekly telephone conference also takes place, with all the partners finding out
and acting upon day to day community issues that are often directly fed in by local people. Anything from intimidating gangs
on street corners, to rubbish being dumped on the street, the number of different partners involved means that a lot of these
issues can be dealt with very quickly. If you are a local Sharrow resident and have concerns about antisocial behaviour
or other community issues in the area, get in touch with Ruth Passey, Community Involvement Worker on 0114 250384 or your
local Police Community Support Officers on 2963184 / 87. Let your concerns be heard and help make a difference to your local
neighbourhood!
SHIPSHAPE
During the summer 2005, representatives
from Health, Sheffield City Council and the Community Sector came together to identify key local health priorities for the
Sharrow area and developed a public health programme to meet those needs. These key priorities included improving access to
local services, developing public health activities in community settings and increasing quality and availability of health
information. One of the first projects to emerge from this work was a joint project between Sharrow Community Forum and Sheffield
South West PCT. This partnership resulted in the setting up of Shipshape! Shipshape, located
on London Road, is a one-stop health information and wellbeing shop and aims to bring local people closer to health services,
activities and local groups in Sharrow by providing all this information in one place! Shipshape offers a whole range of
health related courses including health eating, Indian head massage, diabetes and assertiveness workshops. Shipshape can also
provide support, information and specialist advice on giving up smoking! Drop in sessions for advice with the Patient Advice
Liaison Service and advocacy workers are also available. If
you want to find out about any of these services just drop in at 222 London Road and speak to Elaine, Chris or Tanyat to
find out more! Open Monday to Thursday 9.30am
until 2.00pm Friday 9.30am until 12.30pm.
SHEFFIELD HOMES
After months of consultation
with local people, through forums, workshops and field trips, Sharrow Partnership in partnership with Sheffield Homes has
just employed 2 extra neighbourhood wardens for the Sharrow area. What makes this initiative different is that Sheffield Homes
will actually manage the wardens, who will cover areas that are privately owned and rented, as well as Sheffield Homes’
properties. Sheffield Homes have their own successful and established warden system and whilst the two new wardens will work
in conjunction with other wardens, their roles will be developed and shaped according to local need, with continued engagement
and communication with local people as to what they need from their warden. This partnership with Sheffield Homes will hopefully
lead to a sustainable, successful service with local peoples’ needs at its centre.
