Meet the 'on the ground workers' working for Sharrow

On your street...Vicky Walsh-Balshaw & Mohamoud Ali

We are a new addition to the Sheffield Homes’ Neighbourhood Warden Service this year and are funded by Sharrow Partnership.

Our main role is to be a visible patrol in Sharrow reporting back on issues such as fly tipping, graffiti, faulty street furniture, removal of drugs paraphernalia, and any other antisocial behaviour matters within the community and also giving advice when necessary. We work closely alongside other agencies such as the Police, Streetforce and Environmental Health to provide positive resolutions to the situations that we come across.

The most enjoyable part of our job is being out and about interacting with local residents. We attend TARA meetings, coffee mornings and local forums to promote the service and take on board any issues local residents may have.

Recently we have had an active role in joint agency working with the PCSO’s and Fire Service offering crime prevention advice and applying Smart Water to residences in the Highfield area. We are also working alongside the Police within the local schools carrying out the ‘right to read’ project at Abbeydale, Sharrow and Lowfield primary schools and help organise litter picks with local children.  These initiatives have been very successful and we shall be participating in many others in the near future.

Forever Green.... Holly Barnes

Community forestry aims to clean and green the environment through involving residents, schools, youth groups and community groups to plant trees.

I am working in Sharrow in conjunction with the Sharrow Partnership to help improve the local environment. My aim is to get as many people as possible involved, all the way from the initial decision-making about where and what they would like to see, to actual physical tree planting.

Tree planting in an area such as Sharrow is an exciting challenge as there are lots of issues to contend with such as water mains, electricity cables and sight lines. So whilst there will be a few disappointments along the way, I am determined that together we can make a significant impact on the trees in Sharrow.

So far I have been busy discovering the ins and outs of Sharrow from the best source possible- the community in Sharrow! In the forthcoming months, we will be launching an exciting scheme called ‘Trees for Free’ in Sharrow. We will be offering apple and pear trees for Sharrow residents interested in growing food at home, as well as tree and shrub species to create hedges - an excellent way to mark boundaries whilst providing valuable habitats for wildlife.

If you have any ideas about where you would like to see trees in Sharrow or any questions about my work you can contact me on 07976 988746 or holly.barnes@sheffield.gov.uk or pop in to the Sharrow Community Forum at the Old Junior School, Southview Road.

Getting cleaned up…. Richard Bradshaw

Richard Bradshaw is one of valuable street cleaners in Sharrow who is employed by Street Force and funded by Sharrow Partnership. The new-styled street cleaners called ‘lengthsmen’ have the responsibility for the upkeep of specific lengths of roads.   As well as carrying out street cleaning they provide the eyes and ears for Sheffield City Council and report back if any other work needs doing. Richard enjoys the diversity and hard work that cleaning our streets involves ‘I’ve been working in Sharrow for the last two and half years and I do like working in this area. I think there is more of a community spirit to Sharrow in comparison to other areas in Sheffield. I cover a big area in the Mega Vehicle, more so than if I was using just a barrow.  Certain roads like South View Road get checked twice a day. There are hot spots around where there is some fly-tipping - if small enough I put it in the Mega Vehicle and if it doesn’t fit I call the depot and they come and collect it.

Business as usual... Jonathan Roberts

My work is partly based around economic development in the Sharrow area. What’s that I hear you cry? Well in a nutshell, it’s about offering support to local businesses on a whole range of levels.

As part of this, I'd like to introduce you to our ‘Shop Local’ campaign. Started in June of this year,  we want to encourage local people to support local shops by doing their shopping in Sharrow, hence ‘shop local’. As part of this, businesses now have the opportunity to promote and advertise their business in Sharrow Today through adverts or even profile articles. Bearing in mind Sharrow Today is distributed to over 5000 households in the area this is an ideal way to let the local community know the latest from local retailers.

The ‘Shop Local’ theme will continue through other projects that are about to be launched (keep an eye out for information) such as:

  • Bag Art competition, auction and exhibition
  • Flag design workshops and placement along London Road
  • Signposting throughout the area that alert people to the history, identity and culture of the area
  • Distinctive Sharrow – an aspirational project offering opportunities and design strategies for the area

In the autumn there will be a worker in the area, with part of their remit designed to link people to training and skills opportunities in and around Broomhall, Sharrow and Nether Edge.  More information on this will be available soon.

If you are interested about the ‘Shop Local’ campaign or want to submit a story or an article about your business, please ring Jonathan Roberts on 0114 2508384 or email at: jonathan@sharrowcf.org.uk

Sporting Sharrow...Helen White

Sport Sharrow is an exciting new project aimed at organising and developing all sorts of fantastic, sporty activities for people in Sharrow. Getting people to come together, play sport, talk and form friendships and break down barriers is all part of Sport Sharrow’s goal.

Activity Sheffield are delivering the project for Sharrow Partnership and Helen White who is leading the project is really enthusiastic about all the opportunities coming up. ‘As well as organising activities after school, at weekends and evenings, we at Sport Sharrow, are busy getting ready to delivery a fun-packed summer holiday programme of activities as well as look at developing a local sports forum!’ says Helen.

Kicking off the next round of action will be the mobile Sports Van sessions that give young people aged 8-16 years old a chance to have a go at a range of different sporty activities. Running up to summer there’ll be sessions at both Duchess Road (Tuesdays 5pm – 7pm) and Broadfield Road (Thursdays 4pm – 6pm) so keep those trainers handy. As well as this, cricket coaching sessions, football games and street sports will be going on over the Spring Bank Holiday and all the way through the 6 week summer break! To find out more phone 0114 205 3724 to get your copy of the summer programme activities. And the good news is there’s no need to book beforehand so it’s possible to just turn up and see what’s happening!

There’s also the chance to be a volunteer with Sports Sharrow and work on a range of sports activities and even gain a sports qualification. If you are interested in getting involved or just want to find out more about Sport Sharrow call James Taylor, Sport Sharrow Development Officer on 07909 936 338 or email james.taylor@sheffield.gov.uk to find out more!
